The McNitt family is of Scottish origin, deriving from the Clan McNaughton. The family lived in Ulster (northern Ireland) for a time and came to the American colonies in 1720. Although they married into other Scotch-Irish families for the first several generations in America, Bill McNitt's mother and paternal grandmother descended mostly from New England familiesof English origin which settled in the colonies in the 1600s. His great grandmother McNitt descended from some of the old Dutch families that were among the earliest settlers in the colonies of New York and New Jersey. Emma Merrill's ancestors were mostly New England families of English origin, with sone Dutch families and a few early German immigrants. One of her ancestors was Richard Warren, a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620.
