Passenger List for the Ship Oglethorpe, July 7, 1838

On July 7, 1838, the ship Oglethorpe arrived in the port of New Orleans, Louisiana after a voyage from Le Havre in France.  Aboard were 70 passengers bound for the United States, most of them immigrants from France.  Included among the passengers were at least three families from the neighboring villages of Hennemont and Boinville-en-Woëvre in the Department of the Meuse (part of the old region of Lorraine) in France.  They were headed for Darke County, Ohio, located northwest of Cincinnati, near the Ohio-Indiana state line.

Reproduced below is a transcript of the complete handwritten passenger list presented by the ship's captain to port authorities upon the arrival of the ship.  The handwriting is sometimes hard to read, so I made my best guess on some names.  I transcribed the list from Family History Library Film 0200145 which is a copy of the National Archives and Records Administration's microfilm publication "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, 2 July 1838 - 29 January 1839."  Beneath the transcript, I have added annotations giving additional information on each member of the families traveling from the Meuse to Darke County.

District of Mississippi - Port of New Orleans

I, R.N. Thorpe, Master or Commander of the the ship Oglethorpe so solemnly, sincerely and truly swear, that the within List, signed by me and now delievered to the Collector of this District, contains the names of all Passengers, taken on board the said ship at the Port of Havre or at any time since, and that all matters  therein set forth are according to the best of my knowledge and belief just and true.  I do further swear, that one of the said Passengers have died on the voyage.  R.N. Thorpe

Sworn before me, this the 7th day of July 1838.  ----------, Collector.

There were 71 passengers.

Lewis George aged 1 years died upon 21st May
Paul Oglethorpe Dornary born 29 June

Annotations added by William H. McNitt

These annotations are based on vital records transcriptions published in French Ancestors newsletter and a book of Hennemont vital records (both published by Marianne Doyle, 2923 Tara Trail, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45434-6252), plus ones available on the Family Search website.  The records on the Begin and George children have not been published previously and are from research by Marianne Doyle.

Louis Grillot was born on 15 June 1787 at Pareid, Meuse, France, and was the son of Jean Charles Grillot and Jeanne Barbe Curely.  He married Marie Borin on 14 January 1812 at Hennemont, Meuse, France.  He died on 18 February 1861 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.  View Louis and his family in the 1850 census of York Township, Darke County on page 467A (he is listed as Lewis Grilliot).

Marie Borin was born on 19 January 1790 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Henry Sulpice Borin and Francoise Elizabeth Chaudelet.  She died on 23 May 1868 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.

Louis Joseph Grillot was born on 19 March 1815 at Hennemont and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He died on 18 December 1868 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.

Marie Catherine Grillot was born on 18 December 1817 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  She married Jean Baptiste Frossard.  She died on 13 April 1855 at Shelby County, Ohio, and is buried in St. Remy Cemetery, Russia, Shelby County.

Henry Sulpice Grillot was born on 20 October 1819 at Hennemont and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He married Marguerite Leona Larminach on 23 November 1852 at Frenchtown, Darke County, Ohio.  He died on 1 February 1886 at Wabash Township, Darke County, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown.

Marie Henriette ("Harriet") Grillot was born on 23 August 1821 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  She married Joseph Guillozet on 28 June 1842 at Frenchtown, Darke County, Ohio.  She died on 18 July 1891 at Darke County, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown.

Anne Marie Francoise ("Frances") Grillot was born on 14 November 1828 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  She married Etienne Aubry on 22 January 1853 at Darke County, Ohio.  She died in 1890 in Ohio.

Jean Nicolas Grillot was born on 22 November 1824 at Hennemont and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He married Marie Anne Aubry on 11 January 1853 at Frenchtown, Darke County, Ohio.  He died on 11 May 1872 at Wabash Township, Darke County, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown.

Jean Charles Grillot was born on 24 November 1834 at Hennemont and was the son of Louis Grillot and Marie Borin.  He died in 1870 at York Township, Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown, Darke County.

In spite of the spelling of the surname, this apparently is Jean Francois Begin (this surname was often pronounced by old-timers as "Bay-zhee").  Jean Francois Begin was born on 22 November 1789 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Begin and Barbe Henry.  He married Marguerite Le Reboulet on 3 March 1813 at Hennemont.

Marguerite Le Reboulet was born in 7 Feb 1790 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Francoise Le Reboulet.

Jean Joseph Begin was born in 3 May 1816 at Hennemont and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet.

Although listed as female on the passenger list, he is Francois Begin in the Hennemont records.  Francois was born on 27 December 1818 at Hennemont and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet. He died in 1899 at Darke County, Ohio, and is buried at St. Valbert's Cemetery, Wayne Township, Darke County. View Francois and his family in the 1850 census of Wayne Township, Darke County on page 307B.

Is Mary the Barbe Begin born on 24 November 1820 at Hennemont?  Perhaps her full name was Marie Barbe.

George Begin was born on 21 April 1823 at Hennemont and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet.  Is he the George Begien in the 1880 census of Anderson, Madison County, IN, age 58, born in France, with one son born in Ohio?

Justin Nicolas Begin was born on 1 May 1830 at Hennemont and was the son of Jean Francois Begin and Marguerite Le Reboulet. Is he the "Huston" Begien in the 1880 census of Anderson, Madison County, IN, age 50, born in France, with a son born in Ohio?

Pierre George was born on 10 August 1796 at Boinville-en-Woëvre, Meuse, France, and was the son of Nicolas George and Francoise Le Reboullet.  He married Marie Catherine Laurent on 23 February 1826 at Boinville-en-Woëvre.  He died on September 1, 1849 at Darke County, Ohio, and is buried in St. Bernard Cemetery, Burkettsville, Darke County.  He appears in the 1840 census of Shelby County, Ohio.  His brother Nicolas George emigrated to Ohio with his family around 1836 and is buried in Holy Family Cemetery, Frenchtown.

Marie Catherine Laurent on 8 August 1802 at Boinville-en-Woëvre and was the daughter of Maurice Laurent and Marie Marchal. She is probably the Mary George who died on June 20, 1849 and was buried in St, Bernard Cemetery, Burkettsville, Darke County (although the date of birth on that gravestone appears to be either 1812 or 1842).

Lucie George was born on 3 December 1826 at Boinville-en-Woëvre and was the daughter of Pierre George and Marie Catherine Laurent.  She married William Robbins/Robins in Darke County, Ohio on 7 April 1846.  They appear in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Mercer County, Ohio with a Mary George (born 1841/2 in Ohio) living with them.  Presumably she is a daughter of Pierre and Marie who was born after they immigrated to the U.S.  In the 1870 and 1880 censuses William and Lucy were living in Ford County, Illinois.  She died on 30 August 1896 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Nicolas George was born on 18 January 1830 at Boinville-en-Woëvre and was the son of Pierre George and Marie Catherine Laurent.  I have found no further record of him in Ohio.

Louis George was born on 9 March 1837 at Boinville-en-Woëvre and was the son of Pierre George and Marie Catherine Laurent.  As noted on the passenger list, he died during the voyage to America.

I have not yet found Francis Malden in French records, but he did follow the others to western Ohio.  He appears as Francis J. Maldena in the 1840 census of Loramie, Shelby, Ohio with three children of the right age to be those in the ship passenger list.  In the 1850 census of Loramie he was living with his daughter Mary and her family and his name appears as Francis J. Maldence.  He died on 22 August 1852 at the age of 61 years and six months and was buried in St. Valbert's Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio with his name on the gravestone as Francis J. Maldiney.

She is the person listed as Mary Josephine Maldinot who married Andrew Pequignot on 17 August 1848 in Shelby County, Ohio.  In records on her children, her surname appears as Maldini, Maldine, Moldine, Maldina, etc.  Her gravestone in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Newport, Shelby, Ohio gives her date of birth as 1830 and date of death as 1872.

Nicolas Demary was born on 26 July 1804 at Hermeville-en-Woevre, Meuse, France and was the son of  Nicolas Demary and Catherine Cochard.  He married Marie Veriot on 26 September 1827 at Hennemont.  Unlike many of his neighbors, he did not go to Ohio and stopped instead in Louisiana.  He and his wife and some of their children appear in the 1850 census of Vermillion Parish, Vermillion, Louisiana.

Marie Veriot was born on 3 April 1805 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Nicolas Veriot and Rene Lereboullet.

Eloi Nicolas Demary was born on 30 November 1827 at Braquis, Meuse, France and was the son of Nicolas Demary and Marie Veriot.

Leon Francois Demary was born on 21 Feb 1830 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Demary and Marie Veriot.

Eugene Leopold Demary was born on 17 Feb 1832 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Demary and Marie Veriot.

Reine Veronique Demary was born on 4 February 1834 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Demary and Marie Veriot.

Francois Benjamin Demary was born on 31 March 1836 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Demary and Marie Veriot.

Pierre Bloquin was born on 1 Sept 1809 at Hennemont and was the son of Jean Francois Bloquin and Marguerite Gabrielle Desoudin.  He married Marguerite Remont/Remond on 5 May 1830 at Hennemont.  He died on 15 April 1864 at Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.

Marguerite Remont/Remond was born on 11 Feb 1810 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Francois Remont and Helene Thuillier. She died on 30 November 1886 at Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.

Although listed as female on the passenger list, he is Francois Bloquin in the Hennemont records.  Francois was born on 25 August 1832 at Hennemont.  He and his siblings anglicized the name to Brookey.  Frank Brookey died on 22 Oct 1922 at Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio

Georges Bloquin was born on 22 May 1835 at Hennemont.  George Brookey died on 4 February 1894 at Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.

In spite of the spelling, the surname is Reboullet.  Nicolas Reboullet was born on 22 May 1803 at Hennemont and was the son of Pierre Reboullet and Catherine Merlin.  He married Jeanne Marie Goubaux on 27 April 1827 at Hennemont.  He was living in Shelby County, Ohio as late as 1880.

Jeanne Marie Goubaux was born on 6 July 1802 at Hennemont and was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Goubaux and Marguerite Fligny. She died in Ohio in 1856 and was buried in St. Valbert's Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio.

Pierre Reboullet was born on 14 October 1829 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Reboullet and Jeanne Marie Goubaux.  He married Catherine Cardo/Casdo on 29 April 1869 in Shelby County, Ohio.  He died on 13 April 1912 in Shelby County, Ohio and is buried in Graceland Cemetery.

Francois Reboullet was born on 11 April 1834 at Hennemont and was the son of Nicolas Reboullet and Jeanne Marie Goubaux.
